Tax return validations

Error 21 for incomplete shareholder, beneficiary, settlor, or partner or owner details

Resolved – 15 November 2022: We've added and changed validation warnings and errors to help you complete these sections.

For an IR6, these validations will appear if you've started filling in a beneficiary or settlor section regardless of whether it is required.

Original issue: When you validate, an error won't show if you've not completed all the required fields in the following sections:

  • shareholder (IR4)
  • beneficiary (IR6)
  • settlor (IR6)
  • partner or owner (IR7).

If you file the return without filling in the required fields, you'll get error 21.

Tax return validationsError 21 for incomplete transfer details

Resolved – 15 November 2022:

We've added and changed validation warnings and errors to help you complete the transfer section.

Original issue: When you validate, an error won't show if you've not completed all the required fields in a transfer section. If you file the return without filling in the required fields, you'll get error 21.

Tax statementAdditional provisional tax to pay line isn't printing if next years provisional tax is estimated

Resolved – 15 November 2022: When you prepare a return before the final provisional tax instalment is due, an additional line should print on the tax statement that shows how much of the current years provisional tax is still due on the final provisional tax due date. When next years provisional tax is estimated, the line is not printing.

Workpapers & schedulesTransfers received schedule doesn't show the correct tax type the transfer came from

Resolved – 15 November 2022: In the Transfers received schedule, the tax type will now display the correct source. If no source can be identified, such as for a transfer manually entered in Data reconciliation, then Transfer will display.

Also, a period column has been added.

Original issue: The Transfers received schedule always shows the tax type as Income tax regardless of where the transfer was received from.

Workpapers & schedulesOverseas income schedule calculating negative tax credit

Resolved – 15 November 2022: A negative overseas tax credits claimable amount is being calculated when:

  • an IR3 or IR4 has negative overseas income, and
  • there is positive income in the return that is more than the overseas income.

This is incorrect and will cause an error 21 to be received if the return is filed with the negative tax credit.

Tax returnThe UOMI calculator always uses P3 if your client has no IR provisional tax instalments

Resolved – 19 October 2022

If there are no IR provisional tax instalments in Data reconciliation, the Use of money interest (UOMI) calculation always uses the day after the final instalment as the start date, even if you select the day after the first or second instalment as the start date.

This only happens if you use the Calculate UOMI option in the UOMI calculator, not if you override and manually enter the UOMI amount. Learn more about your UOMI options.

Tax statementIR7 – headings for tax credits in the tax statement are confusing

Resolved – 6 October 2022

The headings for Non-refundable tax credits allowed and Refundable tax credits in an IR7 caused confusion because the tax credits aren't refunded in the IR7 itself.

Tax return validationsTransfers error incorrectly displays

Resolved – 6 October 2022

The error "Total of transfers to other return exceeds the available refund" sometimes incorrectly displays even though the refund has been correctly allocated. The transfer needs to be adjusted by 1 cent to remove the error.

Tax return validationsIR3 – error 2002 displays when the ACC calculation is greater than the PAYE on Income with tax deducted

Resolved – 6 October 2022: We've made a change, so the calculation of ACC doesn't result in ACC being more than PAYE. In November 2022, IR will be removing error 2002 from gateway services. Until then, you may still see the error when filing an IR3 return in this situation.

Original issue: If a tailored tax rate is used ACC can end up greater than PAYE on Income with tax deducted. In this situation, you'll receive error 2002, "Total PAYE deducted can't be less than ACC earner's levy", when you file the return.

01107941
Tax return validationsIR10 – when Other expenses is negative, the error isn't clear

Resolved – 6 October 2022

The error message isn't clear when the Other expenses amount is negative. You need to adjust the Total expenses amount to correct the issue.

Resolved – 4 October 2022: We've changed the requirements for compliance settings so that you only need to enter the current year. We also updated the error message: "Before you can save, you need to complete the mandatory fields including the ‘Agency’ for the current tax year under the year-based settings."

Original issue: When you try to save compliance settings for the first time after creating a new client, you may receive the error: "Before you can save, you need to complete the mandatory fields including the ‘Agency’ for all years under the year-based settings."

Tax returnValidation error: Attribution of income/(loss) option must be selected

Resolved – 20 September 2022: We've fixed the issue that was causing the error to appear incorrectly when you validated an IR7 return and had selected an option in the Income/(loss) attribution field.

The error will still appear if you haven't validated the return since this fix. To clear the error from the return, validate the return again.

Original issue: When you validate an IR7 return and have selected the Income/(loss) attribution field, you'll incorrectly see the error: "Attribution of income/(loss) option must be selected".

Tax return validation2022 IR3 – IETC warning messages may incorrectly display when there are losses brought forward

Resolved – 15 September 2022

When you've got a return where there are losses brought forward, the Independent earner tax credit (IETC) is incorrectly showing these validation messages:

  • "Eligible for the IETC has been selected, but income is not between $24000 and $48000" This message shows when KP31 is in the eligible range. It shouldn't be shown.
  • "Income is between $24,000 and $48,000, check if eligible for the IETC" This message isn't shown when KP31 is in this range. It should be shown.

IR issues affecting MYOB Practice tax

IR3 – when total tax paid is more than trust income, error 2010 displays and the return can't be filed

Resolved – 15 September 2022: IR have removed error 2010, which allows you to file an IR3 when the total tax paid is more than the trust income. In MYOB Practice, we'll now show a warning instead of an error in this scenario.

Original issue: IR don't allow you to file an IR3 when the total tax paid is more than trust income even though it can be a valid scenario. You'll get error 2010 if you attempt to file a return in this scenario.

Tax returns

IR6 – the taxable income isn't correct when a trust has a current year loss, but is distributing some income to the beneficiaries

Resolved – 15 September 2022: In an IR6, when the total trust income for the current year is a loss and some income is being distributed to the beneficiaries, the total income in the return and on the tax statement is incorrect.

00830699
Tax statementTax statement sometimes doesn't subtotal income and tax credits

Resolved – 15 September 2022: A subtotal will now always display in the income section, even if there is no income.

Original issue: In some scenarios, the tax statement doesn't include a subtotal for the income and tax credits.

Tax return validationMissing validation for errors

Resolved – 15 September 2022: We've added extra validations for two scenarios:

  • an IR3 with a blank IR215
  • an IR6 when dividend or overseas income credits have been over-allocated as a result of editing.

If you'd filed returns in these scenarios without correcting the issues, you'd receive a rejection with error 21. Now, you'll get an error for these scenarios when you validate your return (before filing).

Original issue: When you validate a tax return, sometimes no error will appear and IR will reject the return with error 21.

Tax returnsIR3NR – the error 2053 doesn't always display correctly when PIE credits overclaimed

Resolved – 10 August 2022

For error 2053 in an IR3NR:

  • the wording of the error for PIE credits now displays: “Total PIE tax credits allowed can't be more than the NZ tax payable on the PIE attributed income”
  • the calculation that triggers the warning has been updated to be when PIE credits is greater than [(tax on taxable income/taxable income) x PIE income].

Original issue: In an IR3NR, the error 2053 doesn't always display correctly when PIE credits are overclaimed.

Tax returnsUnclear validations messages

Resolved – 10 August 2022: We've made changes to validation messages to be more consistent and informative. These changes have been in relation to interest, dividends and residential rental income. Also, we've improved the wording when an IRD number isn't valid and when you receive error 21.

Tax return & schedulesPassive partnership income still attracting ACC levies

Resolved—9 November 2021: We've added an alert for 2021 tax returns that let's you know that the Passive or active? column is redundant. The column has been removed for tax returns in 2022 and onwards.

Original issue: When you've filed a tax return that has passive income entered in the Partnership income, the return incorrectly receives an ACC invoice for this income. Currently, you can only enter active income into partnership income.

In the Partnership income schedule, the Passive or active? field will be automatically selected and shouldn't be changed.

IR issue that affected MYOB Practice tax IR shutdown causing delays in data processing

Resolved—29 October 2021

Due to the recent IR shutdown, their data processing has been delayed. This means that IR data isn't being automatically processed into MYOB Practice. You can manually refresh the IR data from the Data Reconciliation page. The delay affects Tax Manager (desktop product) as well.

Once IR has processed the data, MYOB Practice will automatically download IR data as normal.

Tax returnSync tax return data is incorrectly adding extra transfers

Resolved—21 October 2021: We've released a fix that requires you to sync the data in your tax return again. This updates the transfer amount to the correct value.

Original issue: When a transfer has been received from another tax return or another tax type for the same client (e.g. IR526 transferred to IR3) and you click Sync tax return data, the transfer is incorrectly added again to the return.

If you sync the tax return data multiple times, the transfer amount will be significantly higher than the original.

If you've filed the return, you'll can see the multiple transfers in Data reconciliation > Unreconciled transactions.

Tax notice basis

Error: "There is no 20XX tax return data"

Message showing incorrectly when tax return has been filed

Resolved—21 October 2021

If you've filed a tax return and you're preparing provisional tax notices, the basis year may be incorrect and state that there is no tax return data in MYOB Practice. You may see this error message with the year that is relevant to your tax return: "There is no 20XX tax return data".

The basis year for tax notices is actually correctly using IR assessed data, and the tax return does exist in MYOB Practice, so the error is incorrect. We're working on a fix.

Tax noticeTax notices have original due date

Resolved—14 October: We've released the fix.

Update—11 October: We're prioritising a fix for the affected tax notices that are created before October 7 but are due on or after November 7 (including locked notices). We're not updating any tax notices that were due August 28. This will not update any tax notice PDFs.

Original issue: When you're looking at your tax notices created before 7 October 2021 and the due date is on a weekend, you'll see the original due dates (weekend date) instead of the new due dates (on the following business day).
