ANSWER ID:12186

According to the IRDInland Revenue's KiwiSaver Employer Guide, temporary or casual employees employed for no more than 28 days are not subject to automatic enrolment enrollment into KiwiSaver.

However:

  • if they end up being employed for longer than 28 days they become subject to automatic enrolment, or
  • if temporary or casual employees are already KiwiSaver members then KiwiSaver deductions should be made from their first pay.

In Payroll, a casual employee with no normal hours/days is not automatically enrolled into KiwiSaver. This is because Payroll has no way of knowing the length of time the employee may be employed so will not automatically enrol the employee into KiwiSaver.

titleTo enroll an employee into KiwiSaver
  1. Go to the Maintenance command centre and click Maintain Employees.
  2. Click Select Employee.
  3. Click the applicable employee then click OK.
  4. Click the Personal Details tab.
  5. Enter the employee's Birth Date and select the option Entitled to reside in NZ indefinitely.
  6. Click the Compulsory Deductions tab.
  7. Select the option Eligible for KiwiSaver.

This will enroll the employee in KiwiSaver with an employee contribution of 3% and an employer contribution of 3%.

The employer contribution will appear on the Compulsory Deductions tab, and the employee contribution can be viewed in the employee's Pay Defaults/Totals tab.
