Single Touch Payroll (STP) is an ATO initiative to streamline payroll reporting. You’ll be able to report payroll and super information directly to the ATO when you process a pay run in AccountRight (from either online or desktop company files).

As a result of this change, you may no longer need to complete payment summaries at the end of the financial year as your employees' payroll information will be available to them through the government's online service, myGov.

Payment summaries still required for 2017/2018 payroll year. Even if you've reported payroll information to the ATO via Single Touch Payroll prior to 1 July 2018, you'll still need to prepare payment summaries for the 2017/2018 payroll year.

Take a look at this quick overview

Do I need to set up Single Touch Payroll?

Do a headcount of your total employees on 1 April 2018. This is a headcount – not the full time equivalent (FTE) number. The ATO website explains  more about this headcount .

Did you have 20 or more employees on 1 April 2018?

Yes

You need set up and start reporting using Single Touch Payroll.

No

You don’t need to use STP reporting now, it's only optional.

How to set up Single Touch Payroll

Before reporting payroll and super information to the ATO, you need to check that your company information and employee details meet ATO requirements, and assign an ATO category to all your payroll categories. To do this, you can check your details in AccountRight and view a list of errors that need fixing.

You'll then need to connect your MYOB software to the ATO. Once you've connected, your payroll information will be automatically sent to the ATO the next time you process payroll.
