ANSWER ID:13506

In order for docket printers to work with RetailHospitality, a driver for the device needs to be installed in Microsoft Windows. If your docket printer came with a driver installation disk, use this disk to install the printer driver first. If you don't have an installation disk, you can install a Generic Text Only printer driver in Windows.

For more information about using docket printers and cash drawers, see the RetailHospitality user guide.

Installing a Generic Text Only printer driver
  1. On the computer where the docket printer is connected, click the Windows Start button and choose Control Panel then choose Printers and Faxes.
  2. Click Add Printer. The Add Printer Wizard will appear.
  3. Click Next. You will be prompted to install a Local or Network printer.
  4. Choose Local and ensure that Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer is deselected.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Specify correct port that the printer is connected to.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Specify the manufacturer and model of printer you want to install. Choose Generic as the manufacturer and Generic / Text Only as the printer. See our example below.

  13. Click Next at the Location and Comment window.
  14. When prompted to print a test page, click Yes.
  15. Click Finish  after the test page has printed.

Enable Printer Pooling

Once the driver has been setup, you will also need to enable printer pooling as follows.

  1. Click the Windows Start button and choose Control Panel then choose Printers and Faxes. You will see your relevant printer driver, in other words Generic Text only.
  2. Right-click on this driver and choose Properties.
  3. Click the Ports tab.
  4. Choose the relevant ports for the device (COM, LPT) and also select the relevant USB ports.
  5. Select the option Enable Printer Pooling.
  6. Click OK.
Setting the hardware options in RetailHospitality

Once a driver has been installed correctly:

  1. Go to the RetailHospitality Admin module and choose Hardware.
  2. In the Docket Printer field you should be able to select the installed printer driver, in other words Generic Text only. This method can also be applied to Kitchen and Bar/Beverage fields.

  2. Right-click your relevant printer driver, for example Generic Text only, and choose Properties.

  5. Click OK.
USB docket printers and RetailHospitality

In order for USB docket printers to work with RetailHospitality, they first need to be installed and operating in RetailManager. When installing the USB docket printer, the driver needs to emulate a COM port in windows. RetailManager will only communicate with devices installed as a COM port or LPT port.

To check if the USB driver has emulated a COM port correctly:

  1. In Windows right-click the My Computer icon and choose Manage.
  2. In the list on the left, click Device Manager. Another list should display in the right panel with all the devices.
  3. Double-click the Ports directory. As shown in the following examples, if it has installed correctly it should display the device with a corresponding COM port.
