Protecting against chargebacks and fraud

Whether you trade online or offline, your business is always at risk of fraudulent transactions resulting from stolen credit cards or other buyer scams.

But don’t worry - here are a few things to look out for to protect your business and minimise the risk Customer disputes.

Note that any one of these does not always mean a fraudulent transaction, as their importance depends on the type of business you have; but it’s always better to error on the side of caution.

Look too good to be true?

  • Is this a new buyer who is ordering an atypical amount of products?
  • Has the buyer place unusually large quantities of orders in a short period of time?
  • Has the buyer overpaid, then asked for you to wire the difference?
  • Is the buyer requesting expedited shipping on an expensive item?

Suspicious customer details?

  • Have you previously receive chargebacks from this buyer?
  • Multiple orders to different buyers at the same address?
  • Can't contact the customer via email or phone?
  • Does the shipping address, bulling address, or phone number originate from an unusual location?

What you can do if you think there's fraud

If you're suspicious of fraud, here's a few things you can do:

  • Call the buyer and verify the order
  • Search the internet for the buyer's name, shipping address, email address and phone number - keeping an eye on consistency between the information
  • Contact the PayDirect team on 1300 555 931
