This support note covers the steps required to restore or open a returned company file that has been repaired by MYOB's data file repair service.

What should I do with my corrupted company file?

Before you restore your repaired file you should rename your old (corrupted) file to make sure it's not accidentally mistaken for the repaired file.

Don't delete your old (corrupted) company file as you might want to refer to it later.

To rename your old company file
  1. Simultaneously press the Windows Image and E keys on your keyboard (the Windows Image key is between the Ctrl and Alt keys). The File Explorer or Windows Explorer window appears.
  2. Locate your existing corrupted company file, which will normally be stored in your AccountRight program folder (unless you have specified a different location). Here are the default program folder names and locations for AccountRight v19:

    Double-click the AccountRight program folder to open it, then scroll through the files to locate your corrupted company file.

  3. Right-click the file to be renamed and choose Rename.
  4. Enter the new name (overwriting the existing name) then press the Enter key. Here's an example:

When your repaired company file is returned

Our data file repair team will rename the repaired file with the following conventions (using the Clearwater sample file as the example):

You can set your Windows Explorer to either show or hide the file extension. The file extension is the 3 letters that appear after the dot in the file name. In recent software versions the file extension is .myo or .myox but some earlier versions use a .prm or .dat file extension.

The manner in which your file is returned will determine whether or not it has been backed up. If the file has been backed up it will have a .zip file extension.

If you want to ensure Windows Explorer doesn't hide certain files or file extensions, complete the following:

  1. In Windows Explorer, go to the Tools menu and choose Folder Options. In Windows Vista or later, go to the Organize menu and choose Folder and search options.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Select the Show hidden files, folders and drives option.
  4. Deselect the Hide extensions for known file types option.
  5. Click OK.

Copying the repaired file to your computer

When your file is returned, you will need to save it to the folder on your computer where you normally store your company file, for example C:\Premier19.

If you submitted your file on a CD, DVD, or USB drive, you can copy and paste the file using Windows Explorer.

Copying the repaired company file
  1. Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Windows Start button and choosing Explore (or Open Windows Explorer).
  2. Select the drive which contains the returned disc/removable media.
  3. Locate and the file to be copied.
  4. Right-click this file and choose Copy.
  5. Locate the destination folder on the left side of the Windows Explorer screen.
  6. Right-click this folder and choose Paste.
  7. If the file has been returned to you on a CD (or other removable media) make sure it is not 'Read Only':
    1. Select the company file on the CD.
    2. Go to the File menu and choose Properties (or right-click the company file and choose Properties).
    3. In the Properties window deselect the Read Only option then click Apply. You will now be able to open the company file in your software.
  8. If the file you copied is a .myo (or .prm or .dat) file you should be able to open it with your software as normal.

  9. If the file you copied is a .ZIP file you will need to restore the file using your software's Restore function. You can do this by opening the sample company file, Clearwater, then going to the File menu and choosing Restore.
  10. Specify where you want the restored company file to be stored, and rename the file as required. For more information on using the Restore function, see the AccountRight help (Australia | New Zealand).
