The maximum offset (including current year and carried forward prior year amounts) that you and your affiliates can claim in 2017-18 is $200,000.

You'll find this worksheet at:

  • Item T9: Early stage investor
  • Preparation > Schedules > Early stage investor worksheet (esi)
  • Navigation Pane > Worksheets > Early stage investor

Before completing the worksheet and claiming the ESIC tax offset, it's important to read Early stage investor tax offset on the ATO website.

To complete the worksheet
  1. Click in Goto (F2) and enter T9 and press Enter or click label L: Current year tax offset to open with front entry ESIC tab.

  2. The Evidence the company qualifies as ESIC obtained question is mandatory and the Sophisticated investor checkbox should be ticked if, for at least one of the transactions, the taxpayer has passed the sophisticated investor test.

In the following example, both checkboxes are ticked and the taxpayer will be entitled to claim 20% of the investment amount as a tax offset.

  3. Enter any Excess offset b/f If the taxpayer couldn't claim the offset or any part of it in the previous year. You must adjust this amount in accordance with Div 65 of the ITAA 1997 to account for any net exempt income (foreign or Australian) earned. You'll find any c/f excess from the previous year on that year's Notice of Assessment.

  4. Click the Worksheet button and fill out the details as required.

  5. Click Close and then press F6 or click OK or the Save icon for the amounts to filter through to labels L and O

  6. The taxpayer has also received a distribution of the ESIC tax offset of $2650.00 from a trust. The distributing trust was one the agent acts for and MYOB has created the transaction in the dit at item 13: label U.

The distributed share of esi tax offset has the code D in the esi worksheet. The taxpayer does not need to have passed the sophisticated investor test to receive a distribution from a partnership or trust.

  7. Click in Goto (F2) and enter T9 and press Enter and you'll see that the amount at item 13 label U has filtered through to the esi worksheet and also updated T9 label L.

  8. To complete the distribution of the share of esi tax offset from a trust or a partnership, click Goto (F2) and enter 13 and press enter, then click the non-primary production label U for a trust distribution or O for a partnership distribution received, and complete the details.

F4 Detailed estimate example

In this example, the taxpayer has a loss of income in the current year and has both carry forward losses and a non-refundable carry forward Early Stage Investor tax offset.

The Early Stage investor tax offset (ESIC) is not used in the calculation of GDP-Adjusted PAYG income tax instalments purposes.
