Long service leave is an employee entitlement to additional time off work on full pay after an extended period of service with an employer.

Different rules and legislation apply in each state of Australia, so check to see the rules that apply to your business. The FairWork website is a good place to start.

MYOB Essentials can't track or calculate the accrual of long service leave. But to pay long service leave, just set up a new earning pay item.

 

To pay long service leave

To pay long service leave 

  1. Go to the Payroll menu and choose Employees.
  2. Click the employee's name.
  3. Click the Pay items - earnings & deductions tab.
  4. Under Earnings, click the Add earning dropdown arrow and choose Create new earning.
  5. Set up the a new earning called, for example, Long Service Leave Paid and enter the applicable Rate and Amount. For clarification on which tax, super, leave and ATO reporting category options you should select for your circumstances, check with your accounting advisor or the ATO.
  6. Click Save. The earning is now listed for this employee.
  7. Click Save.

When you pay the employee for long service leave taken

Enter the number of paid hours against Long Service Leave Paid and reduce their Normal hours by the same amount. Here's an example of 152 hours of paid long service leave and Normal hours reduced to zero.
