Do I need to use 2-factor authentication every time I sign in?

When you first sign in using 2-factor authentication, you can choose not to use 2FA again on that specific computer and browser for 30 days. From then on, we'll only ask for your password when you sign in.

But don't worry, you're still protected by 2FA because when you

still use your email address and password to sign into your online MYOB software.

Then you'll need to enter an authentication code to verify that it's you.

There's three ways to get this code:

  • via an authenticator app (recommended) on a mobile device (phone, tablet, etc.)—the code displays in the app
  • via email—the code is in an email sent to the address linked to your MYOB account
  • via SMS—the code is sent to your mobile phone via text message

What is it?

2-factor authentication (2FA) is a secure sign in process that combines something you know (your password) with something you have (your phone).

2-factor authentication pilot

2-factor authentication is currently in a pilot as we add more MYOB businesses over the coming weeks. This means that if you've registered your interest but haven't been prompted to setup 2FA when you sign in, your business has yet to be added to the pilot.

However, keep an eye out, because we'll be adding your business soon!

Check out this short video for an overview of 2-factor authentication with MYOB:

Change to sign-in frequency

If you notice that you’re being prompted to sign in to MYOB more frequently, or less frequently, than previously, this is because of a security enhancement we’ve released in response to customer requests.

These days a password isn't enough to protect your online data. That's why we use two-factor authentication (2FA) as a second layer of protection. It involves using something only you have access to: either your email inbox or a mobile device.

This makes it harder for unauthorised people to get into your MYOB software.

How does it work?

You'll

sign in using your MYOB email and password as usual.
  • You'll be asked for a verification code, which you'll get from an authenticator app on your phone.
  • These unique verification codes are generated in the authenticator app just for you when you sign in, so you never have to worry about losing or forgetting it.

    Getting set up

The first time you access your online MYOB software, you'll be guided through the 2FA setup. For detailed steps on setting it up, see Setting up two-factor authentication.

To learn more about what 2FA method to choose, see Choosing which two-factor authentication method to use.

Once you're set up with mobile app or email 2FA, you'll be able to switch between these methods. See Switching between email and app two-factor authentication.

Can I use multiple devices for 2-factor authentication?

No, you can only use one trusted device for the authenticator app to receive your verification codes.

Why do I need to install an app to use 2-factor authentication? Can my verification code be messaged to me instead?

MYOB's method of 2-factor authentication requires an authenticator app. Without the app, two-factor authentication cannot be enabled for your account.

We use an authenticator app instead of SMS because authenticator apps can generate a 2FA verification code without mobile network coverage, so you can access your MYOB account anywhere, anytime.

You can use any authenticator that is TOTP compliant; but we recommend using either of these authenticator apps:

    • Google Authenticator
    • Windows Authenticator

No, you do not need mobile coverage on your phone to access the authenticator app.

    Sign in with SMS 2FA
    1. Sign in to your MYOB account as normal, using your email address and password. When you click Sign in, a 6 digit code is sent to your mobile phone via SMS.
    2. Enter the 6 digit code and click Verify code.

    Don't have your phone?

Click I don't have access to my phone and follow the prompts to enter your backup code (this code was provided when you set up SMS 2FA).

If you don't have a backup code, contact us and we'll be glad to help.

What happens if I get a new phone?

Because the authentication app is tied to the phone it's installed on, switching phones means you'll no longer be able to access your verification codes until you enable 2FA on your new device.

First, before getting rid of your old phone, you need to turn off 2-factor authentication. Alternatively, you can sign in using one of your backup codes
