There are two ways to set up three ways you can use two-factor authentication (2FA):

  • via an authenticator app (recommended) on a mobile device (phone, tablet, etc.)—your 2FA code displays in the app
  • via email—your 2FA code is in an email sent to the address linked to your MYOB account
, email 2FA, and app-based 2FA.

Email 2FA is being rolled out from the beginning of May 2018. If you don't have access to email 2Fa yet, don't worry - it will be available to you soon.

Which method should I choose?

It's important to use a method that works for you.

Authenticator app 2fA

For most people, the easiest and most secure method is to use an authenticator app
  • via SMS—your 2FA code is sent to your mobile phone via text message

Which 2FA method is best for you depends on what devices you use, and how you access your account. See below for a comparison between app and email 2FA.

If you're an accountant or a bookkeeper, you might have some specific questions - if you don't find the answers here, you might find them in two-factor authentication for accountants and bookkeepers.

Use an app (recommended)

Authenticator apps are the easiest and most secure 2FA method for most people.

An authenticator app is an app that you install on your phone , or tablet , or computer, which generates a secure authentication code which you'll need to sign in to your MYOB account. You don't need internet access to use an authenticator app, but you do need to have access to your phone, tablet, or computer the device each time you sign in using 2FA.You can also download single use backup codes.

On Android and Apple devices, use the Google Authenticator app. On a Windows device, use the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Don't want to use an authenticator app? Learn how to change your two-factor authentication method.

You can also save a single use recovery code, in case you temporarily lose access to your device.

Don't worry about finding an app, we have recommended apps for each type of phone in our instructions for setting up authenticator app 2FA.

Email 2fA

People who

Use email

If you don't have a smart phone or can't use a smart phone for 2FA can set it up using the email account they sign into their MYOB account with.

To use email 2FA, you will need access to the inbox of your email account every time you sign in using 2FA.

What if I...

For security reasons you should consider setting up unique logins for everyone using your account.

If this isn't possible, you have three options:

  1. Use a shared phone.
Do you have a corporate phone that could be shared in the office? You can set up an authenticator app on the shared phone, and make sure all shared users have access to it.
Consider how practical this solution will be for your office. For instance, how would team members work outside the office?

  2. Use an authenticator app called Authy.
With Authy, you can set up an account and share the credentials across multiple devices. Each user can access it in a browser or install it as a desktop or mobile app, and sharing credentials means that they can all access the same 2FA codes.

  3. Use email 2FA.
If everyone using your shared login has access to the email account associated with that login, you can use email 2FA. All users need access to the email inbox so that they can receive the authentication code when they log in.

smartphone or other mobile device, email 2FA might be the best option for you. By default you'll be set up for email 2FA, so there's nothing you need to set up. If you've switched to app 2FA but want to go back to email 2FA, learn how to switch.

Email 2FA uses the email address you sign in to your MYOB account. When you sign in you'll be emailed a code, which you'll use to gain access to your account. If you need to change your email address, see the Frequently Asked Questions in Getting help with two-factor authentication.

To use email 2FA, you'll always need internet access, and access to your email inbox each time you sign in.

You can also save a single use recovery code, in case you temporarily lose access to your device.

Use SMS

Some things to know about SMS 2FA:

  • It's quick and easy to set up
  • It's more secure than email 2FA
  • It includes a “Smart Remember Me” option built-in, which means you won't be prompted to provide a code every time you sign in to MYOB.
  • You can also save a single use recovery code, in case you temporarily lose access to your device.

You can switch to SMS 2FA by resetting your 2FA in My Account.
