ANSWER ID:274

Before you start

This belongs to a series of articles about getting your website found on Google and other search engines. We suggest that you read Getting found on Google and other search engines before you read this article.

After you've created your MYOB Atlas website, we'll automatically submit your sitemap to Google, Bing and Yahoo for you. This will help these search engines to accurately index your website. Indexing is the process wherein search engines collect and store information about your website, and then use this information to make your website appear in search results.

Once you've created your website, it usually takes between one and four weeks (or sometimes even longer) for your website to begin appearing in Google, Bing and Yahoo search results. If it still isn't appearing in search results for these search engines after this time, or if it isn't appearing in search results for other popular search engines, see the options outlined in How else can I get my website indexed? below.

How can I check if my website has been indexed?

To check if your website has been indexed by Google, Bing or Yahoo, go to one of the search engines (say, www.google.com) in your web browser and search for the phrase site:your_website_address (making sure you replace your_website_address with your own web address).

If your website:

  • has been indexed, you'll see a list of search results that link to the pages of your website.
  • hasn't been indexed, you'll see a message similar to the following: Your search - site:your_website_address - did not match any documents.
How else can I get my website indexed?

If your website hasn't been indexed by search engines, you can use the options outlined below to help get it indexed.

Submit your website manually

You can manually submit your website homepage to the most popular search engines: Google, Bing and Yahoo. To submit your website homepage to:

Note that you should not submit your website homepage more than once a month, or you may be penalised by the search engines (for example, your website may be banned from being indexed).

In addition to submitting your website homepage, you can submit your sitemap to search engines. This ensures that search engines have a record of all the web pages within your website (rather than just the homepage). We automatically submit your sitemap to Google, Bing and Yahoo for you. For more information, see Submitting your sitemap to search engines.

Promote your website on well-known sites

Another good way to get indexed is to display your website address on websites that search engines already know about, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. You can use the Tell the world feature in MYOB Atlas to post your website address and a message to these social networking sites. This will help search engines find your website. For more information, see Telling the world about your website.

It's also worth promoting your website on other well-known sites, such as business directories (like Yellow Pages and Hot Frog), or websites related to the industry that you're in.

What's next?

Once your website has been indexed by Google and other search engines, you can start thinking about how to improve your website's search ranking. For guidelines on how to do so, see Improving your website's search ranking.
