What phones work with

MYOB's two-factor authentication works with any iOS, Windows and Android smartphone.

Don't have a smartphone? Soon you'll be able to use 2FA with an email account. We'll let you know when this option is available.

To turn 2FA on now, click this link, sign in with your MYOB account details and follow the setup prompts. Otherwise, you can turn on 2FA at any time from the Security Centre. For more information on setting up 2FAstill use your email address and password to sign into your online MYOB software.

Then you'll need to enter an authentication code to verify that it's you.

There's three ways to get this code:

  • via an authenticator app (recommended) on a mobile device (phone, tablet, etc.)—the code displays in the app
  • via email—the code is in an email sent to the address linked to your MYOB account
  • via SMS—the code is sent to your mobile phone via text message

Adding two-factor authentication (2FA) to your account improves your security by making it harder for other people to access your data.

Passwords are a single line of defence, but if your password is lost or stolen you can be locked out of your account, and your data can be accessed.

2FA adds a second line of defence, and keeps your data secure.

Soon 2FA will be mandatory for all MYOB software users, to comply with new industry standards.

What is it?

2FA is a secure sign in process that combines something you know (your password) with something you have (your phone). Don't have a phone? You'll soon have the option to set up 2FA using an email account instead. Or, you could use a desktop authenticator app called Authy. See the FAQs below for more info.

Change to sign-in frequency

If you notice that you’re being prompted to sign in to MYOB more frequently, or less frequently, than previously, this is because of a security enhancement we’ve released in response to customer requests.

These days a password isn't enough to protect your online data. That's why we use two-factor authentication (2FA) as a second layer of protection. It involves using something only you have access to: either your email inbox or a mobile device.

This makes it harder for unauthorised people to get into your MYOB software.

How does it work?

You'll

sign in using your MYOB email and password as usual.
  • You'll be asked for a verification code, which you'll get from an authenticator app on your phone. (You'll download this app during the 2FA setup process)
  • These unique verification codes are generated in the authenticator app just for you when you sign in, so you never have to worry about losing or forgetting it.

I’m using shared logins - how can I use an authenticator app?

Because most authenticator apps can only be installed on one device, using shared logins creates a problem when multiple people need access to the app.

Ideally, everyone should have their own unique log in details. If you’re using a shared login, you should think about moving to unique logins.

If unique logins aren’t possible, you have three options:

    1. Use a shared phone.
Do you have a corporate phone that could be shared in the office? You can set up an authenticator app on the shared phone, and make sure all shared users have access to it.
Consider how practical this solution will be for your office. For instance, how would team members work outside the office?

    2. Use an authenticator app called Authy.
With Authy, you can set up an account and share the credentials across multiple devices. Each user can access it in a browser or install it as a desktop or mobile app, and sharing credentials means that they can all access the same 2FA codes.

    3. Wait for email 2FA.
Soon you’ll be able to use an email account to get a 2FA code, instead of an app. To get ready for email 2FA you can make sure all users have access to the email address which is linked to the shared login. When email 2FA is released, you’ll be ready to add it to your account.

What if more than one person needs access to my account (e.g., accountant)?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is specific to your user account, not your file or business. By you enabling 2FA for your log in, it will not impact other users accessing your file. Each person can choose to opt-in to 2FA for their account. For more information, see Two-factor authentication for accountants and bookkeepers.

Why do I need to install an app to use two-factor authentication? Can my verification code be messaged to me instead?

2FA will be mandatory soon, and we'll be releasing an email 2FA option to make it easier for users who can't use an authenticator app.

For the moment though, MYOB's method of two-factor authentication requires an authenticator app. Without the app, two-factor authentication cannot be enabled for your account.

We use an authenticator app instead of SMS because authenticator apps can generate a 2FA verification code without mobile network coverage, so you can access your MYOB account anywhere, anytime.

You can use any authenticator that is TOTP compliant; but we recommend using either of these authenticator apps:

    • Google Authenticator
    • Windows Authenticator
    • Authy

Do authenticator apps require mobile coverage, data or internet access?

Once installed, most authenticator apps don't require mobile coverage, data or internet access. But it's best to check the settings within your authenticator app to see if you need to enable offline funtionality.

Going overseas? No problem, your authenticator app will still work. If the Google Authenticator app stops working while overseas, it might be a time sync issue (see this Google support doc for help).

If you have any issues using your authenticator app (overseas or at home), check the help for your app.

What happens if I get a new phone or mobile number?

Because the authentication app is tied to the phone it's installed on, if you change your number but use the same phone, 2FA won't be affected.

But if you change phones, you'll no longer be able to access your verification codes until you enable 2FA on your new device.

First, before getting rid of your old phone, you need to turn off 2-factor authentication. Alternatively, you can sign in using one of your backup codes. If you can't access your phone or backup codes, please see Recovering your account.

    Log out when you’re done

It’s good security practice to log out at the end of every session.

Which 2FA method is right for me?

It's more secure and easier to use an authenticator app, however you'll be set up for email 2FA by default. As well as email or app 2FA, you can also set up SMS 2FA. Need more details? See Choosing which two-factor authentication method to use

titleHow does 2FA work when multiple users need to access the same data?

2FA is unique to each user account. Multiple accounts can still access the same data (for example, a company file), but each user should have their own login and 2FA method.

We don't recommend sharing a single login between multiple people. Learn how to add a new user to AccountRight or MYOB Business.
