STP training

We're putting together some STP training to help you implement this ATO reporting change. More details coming soon...

Do I need to report via STP?

If you pay employees, you need to report to the ATO via STP. See the ATO website about starting to report STP.

STP Phase 1 and Phase 2

The ATO first introduced STP in July 2018. In January 2022 they expanded STP to include some additional information in your STP reporting. They called this expansion STP Phase 2. Learn more on the ATO website.

If you set up STP any time after mid-December 2021, you'll be set up for STP Phase 2. Otherwise you can easily move from STP Phase 1 to STP Phase 2.

Setting up STP

You'll be guided through the setup process to make sure your payroll details meet the ATO's requirements. You'll then set up a connection to the ATO.

For all the details, see Setting up Single Touch Payroll reporting. Also find out What happens after I've set up Single Touch Payroll?

You must be reporting to the ATO via STP Phase 2

If you haven't already, you need to move to STP Phase 2 to stay compliant with the ATO. But we have you covered – see how easy it is to move.

Single Touch Payroll (STP) is an ATO initiative to streamline payroll reporting. You’ll be able to report payroll and super information from AccountRight to the ATO at the same time you process a pay run.Sit back and watch this quick overview:a simple way to report your employees’ payroll information to the ATO and keep your business compliant. If you’ve subscribed to MYOB AccountRight, you can start STP reporting now — there are no additional charges.

Once you're set up, you'll send your employees' salary, tax and super info to the ATO after each pay. At the end of the financial year you'll do a quick finalisation to let the ATO know you've finished paying your employees for the year. Your employees can access their payroll information through the ATO's online service, MyGov, which also simplifies their annual tax returns.

STP Category

You’ll notice a new field called STP Category in some of your payroll categories. This will be used for Single Touch Payroll reports, which some employers may need to start lodging from 1 July 2018. Although you can choose an STP Category now, it's not mandatory yet. We're just getting things ready. Watch this space...

The ATO guidelines for these are not available yet – but check back soon!

Things to do now

There are no tasks for you to complete in AccountRight yet.

In our next update (AccountRight 2018.1 available in late March) we’ll prompt you to start reviewing your employee and payroll information to make sure it meets the needs of STP reporting.

Next steps

On 1 April 2018 you’ll need to do a headcount of your employees. This is a headcount – not the full time equivalent (FTE) number.

Do you have 20 or more employees?

Yes

You’ll need to start reporting payroll and super information using Single Touch Payroll from 1 July 2018.

Instructions on how to get ready are coming soon.

No

You don’t need to use STP reporting now, it's only optional.

But, watch this space. All employers may need to start reporting using STP from 1 July 2019, subject to new legislation being passed.
